Overview
The course has been designed to provide high quality training to senior specialist registrars, hospital specialist doctors and consultants from the UK and abroad who wish to develop their skills in otological surgery.
The faculty consists of senior otologists from Universities throughout the UK. It is held at the Surgical Skills and Simulation Centre at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, a state of the art skills centre specifically designed with this type of course in mind.
The focus of the course is on surgical technique and the number of places is limited to 16 dissection delegates in order to ensure a high faculty to delegate ratio maximising learning opportunities for delegates. High quality fresh frozen specimens will be used.
Target Audience
It is highly recommended for Consultants, Accredited Specialists, and Specialist trainees years 6-8
Learning Style
Presentations and hands-on skills using cadaveric tissue.
Aims & Objectives
The aim is provide comprehensive anatomical dissection and simulated operative procedures of the whole range of otologic surgery, lateral skull base surgical approaches, endoscopic ear surgery and a range of auditory implants. The course also provides panel discussions on a range of topics related to modern otologic practice.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the of course, the participant should have anatomical knowledge & surgical training in:- Canalplasty, Atticotomy , Attico-antrostomy , Cortical Mastoidectomy, Modified Radical Mastoidectomy , Posterior Tympanotomy , Translabyrinthine approach to the internal auditory meatus , the middle fossa approach, Jugular Fossa Exploration , Endoscopic Ear Surgery, Ossiculoplasty, Laser stapedotomy, cochlear implantation, middle ear implantation and bone conduction device implantation.
On completion of the of course, the participant should: Be aware of current practice in tympanoplasty, ossiculoplasty, stapedotomy surgery Be aware of current practice in cholesteatoma surgery and describe how to manage complications. Be aware of patient selection criteria for different forms of auditory implantation Be aware of current practice in lateral skullbase surgery
