CABC Trauma Course

RCSED's newly launched CABC Trauma is a hybrid course created to meet the training demands of a UK based Major Trauma Centre ‘Trauma Team’. The CABC Trauma course teaches an organised system of assessment, recognition of injury severity and how to deliver life and limb threatening interventions to trauma patients.

The course recognises that optimal trauma care is delivered by trained, multidisciplinary teams from multiple specialties, and the course is designed with these teams in mind. Individuals can demonstrate their competencies in essential and advanced trauma skills, and in being a member of the trauma team (TTM), or they can use the course as a training opportunity to learn these skills and systems from our faculty of surgeons and trauma specialists. Trauma Team Members with suitable experience can progress further, by demonstrating Trauma Team Leader (TTL) competencies.

The course is suitable for all resource settings and acknowledges WHO Global Emergency and Trauma Care Initiative’s principles in essential trauma care, and the NHS ‘Greener Operations’ principles for Sustainable Peri-Operative Practice.

Suitability

The course is suitable to train all staff who attend trauma patients.

(Senior Medical Students, FY1&2, Core Surgical Trainees, Acute Common Core Stem Trainees, Emergency Department Nurses, Trauma Ward Nurses and Therapists and Pre-Hospital Medics and Paramedics).

CABC is strongly recommended for Core Emergency and Surgical Trainees who are training to become Trauma Team Leaders. The trauma curriculum delivers at core training level and meets approval as the mandatory trauma course requirement for ST3 selection.

Selection for CABC Faculty is aptitude and competency based. Candidates with Faculty Potential (FP) will be identified during the course and invited to attend faculty training. The TTL standard is normally achieved at ST3 level.

Course Format

CABC Trauma is a hybrid online/face to face course in trauma resuscitation skills and care of the polytrauma patient, which consists of:

  • Online learning delivered via our Virtual Learning Environment, which will be made available to candidates upon registration. This is expected to occupy the equivalent of a single day of study leave (8hours).
  • A further two days of "Face to Face" training comprising of:

1) Individual practical skills workshops

 Primary and Secondary Survey
 Application of Pelvic Binder
 Intra-Osseous insertion for Resuscitation
 Management of Massive Haemorrhage (Haemostatic dressings, packing a bleeding wound, Protocol Activation)
 Simple Airway Adjuncts and Manoeuvres
 Surgical Cricothyroidotomy
 Administration of Local Anaesthesia
 Needle/Finger/Tube Thoracostomy (Chest drains)
 Basic Suturing skills

2) Group discussions and Case Studies

3) Scenario based training in Trauma Teams

 ATMIST and Handover tools
 Debriefing methods
 Trauma Psychology and Caring for your trauma team

Candidates can decide to attend the course for training, or to demonstrate competency in trauma skills. The CABC Trauma course uses the principles of ipsative assessment to demonstrate success. Workplace based assessments (ISCP- DOPS, CEXs and CBDs) are used throughout the course, but successful candidates may also demonstrate improvement in their trauma knowledge through self-assessment, a learning portfolio or by reflective writing.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the CABC Trauma course is to train all members of a trauma team, as individuals and as team members. The course is equally applicable to teams working in UK level 1 major trauma centres and for teams working in lower resource settings.
