Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP)
CCrISP is a two-day, interactive course (including mandatory, pre-course e-learning) covering the practical skills and knowledge needed to look after surgical patients, including those who are deteriorating or at risk of doing so.
Highly knowledgeable faculty from surgical and anaesthetic specialties will help you develop practical, theoretical and personal skills in a safe environment so that you can assess and manage critical situations in a systematic way.
CCrISP is relevant to all specialties, however, examples are predominantly taken from general surgical patients.
Suitability
This course is most suitable for CT1-2 and SAS grades.
Senior trainees are also welcome to attend a CCrISP course if they have not done so before.
Please note that FY1 trainees are not eligible to attend this course and should attend the 'Future Surgeons: Critical Care' course instead. FY2 trainees are also not permitted to attend until they reach the final 2 months of their placement (June/July). FY2 trainees should be aware that the course has been designed specifically for CTs so they may find the face-to-face sessions challenging. All participants should take care to prepare as thoroughly as possible for the best chance of passing the course.
This course is also suitable for Surgical Care Practitioners (SCPs).
Course Format
CCrISP is an interactive course that combines a variety of teaching and learning techniques, such as simulated patient scenarios, case-based skill stations and demonstrations. You will be encouraged to share knowledge and experience with your peers throughout the course.
Course Objectives
The course has been designed to address the perceived needs of trainees. The course aims to provide instruction in the practical management of critically ill surgical patients of all types. It aims to provide participants with a common-sense, consensus approach rather than be 'leading edge'.
Learning Outcomes
After attending this course, you should be able to:
- Adopt a structured, comprehensive approach to managing surgical patients
- Judge which patients are at most risk and plan to reduce their risk of adverse outcomes
- Recognise the deteriorating patient
- Model your non-operative technical skills in a safe environment
