Course Overview

This 1st module in a series of 4 covers “Opening and Closing”, “Shared Decision Making with Patients” and “Communication of Risk".

Course Format

The pre-course materials include a video on communication of risk and some pre-course reading. On the day there will be discussion of these, teaching on Shared Decision Making (including the “3 talk model”) and practice in simulation with small group debrief.

Suitability

Relevant Grades: ST2, ST3, ST4, ST5, ST6, ST7, ST8.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, trainees will be able to:

  • Explain the need for Consultation Skills, therapeutic conversations and Shared Decision Making (SDM) with patients
  • List the core elements of good consultation and the pitfalls
  • Demonstrate use of the “team talk and options talk” parts of the “3 talk” model.
