Recognition And Prevention Of Injury And Deterioration (RAPID)
RCSEd's newly launched RAPID course and methodology aims to outline a safe and straight-forward approach to the management of all types of surgical patients through the simulation of a multi-disciplinary ward round. This Critical Care course provides an approach which can be used in partnership with a candidate’s existing expertise to provide a high level of care which should aid the recognition of complications and the provision of high-quality patient care, using the following:

Curriculum
The vignettes and moulages link to:
- Capabilities in Practice 1: Manages an outpatient clinic
- Capabilities in Practice 2: Manages the unselected emergency take
- Capabilities in Practice 3: Manages ward rounds and the ongoing care of inpatients
- Capabilities in Practice 4: Manages an operating list
- Capabilities in Practice 5: Manages multidisciplinary working

Suitability
CT1, CT2
While this course is primarily aimed at those within the aforementioned training levels, early years registrars and doctors on a core level rota/roster may benefit. The standard is set to a minimally competent last day core trainee.
Course Format
RAPID is a hybrid online/face to face Critical Care course, which consists of:
- Online vignettes delivered via our Virtual Learning Environment, which will be made available to candidates in the weeks prior to the course. This is expected to occupy the equivalent of a single day of study leave.
- Group Discussion
- In-person practical workshops/moulages
- Candidates will be have their skills assessed via practical moulages. This occupies a single day of study leave.
LOs
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of critical care
- Apply a systematic approach for the assessment of patients
- Identify an appropriate pathway for continuing patient care
- Formulate a management plan for deteriorating patients
- Distinguish between the stable and the deteriorating patient
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to lead a surgical ward round
