Overview
Making, and living with mistakes, is a fundamental part of what it means to be a surgeon. And yet, studies show that many feel poorly prepared and struggle to cope with the profound effects that these mistakes can have on them. They often feel unsupported and isolated; and can even feel that conversations with colleagues can make things worse. There is very little open discussion about this central area within our profession, and surgeons often suffer in silence: burning out, dropping out, or surviving with maladaptive coping mechanisms. The True Cut workshop aims to promote a deeper exploration of the issues, including: how we help to build coping strategies in ourselves and our colleagues; how we respond to affected patients and families; and how we support each other in the aftermath of an error. It is equally valuable for established surgeons and junior trainees.
Target Audience
Surgeons at all levels and Trainees
Learning Style
The day is built around a performance of the play True Cut, a verbatim drama formed from interviews with surgeons, their colleagues and patients. Each scene raises topics for deeper discussion in small groups within a safe, supportive, confidential environment. Evidence from the scientific literature will be combined with thought provoking studies from the arts to promote deeper engagement and reflection.
