Membership in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (MOMS)
The Membership in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (MOMS) exam is designed to test the knowledge and clinical competence relevant to the practice of a specialist in oral surgery. Candidates will be expected to diagnose and provide appropriate treatment plans for patients with a range of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery problems.

Exam Format
The Membership in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery exam is divided into two sections.
- Section 1 – Written Paper
This section consists of two parts. Each part is of two hours’ duration, and each will include 90 Single Best Answer (SBA) Questions.
- Section 2 – Structured Clinical Scenarios
This is a four hour clinical examination (normally split into two sessions) on eight patient histories and the related diagnostic records. Candidates will be given 15 minutes to study each patient history, followed by a 15 minute structured oral examination on each history.
Exam Eligibility
To be eligible to enter for the Membership Examination, all candidates must:
- Provide certified evidence of a primary dental qualification that is acceptable to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
- Provide evidence that they will have completed a period of 30 months full-time training (or part-time equivalent) in this specialty.
Candidates who do not exactly fulfill the above requirements may apply for special consideration of their experience provided they submit the full details to the Examination Section of the College.
Candidates will be permitted a maximum of four attempts at the examination.
