Overview
The Foundations of Fracture Fixation course is a hybrid, simulation-based programme designed to equip junior doctors with a solid grounding in the principles and practical application of fracture fixation.
The course bridges the gap between undergraduate orthopaedic knowledge and safe participation in the operating theatre, focusing on core fixation concepts through structured teaching and hands-on workshops using sawbone models and orthopaedic instrumentation.
Course Format
Hybrid format:
• Mandatory pre-course e-learning
• One full day of face-to-face teaching and practical simulation workshops
Course Aims and Objectives
The course aims to:
• Develop a safe and systematic understanding of fracture fixation principles
• Improve junior doctors’ confidence and competence in theatre
• Provide structured exposure to common fixation techniques used in Trauma & Orthopaedics
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Understand and apply fundamental principles of fracture fixation
• Demonstrate safe handling of orthopaedic instruments and power tools
• Perform basic fixation techniques on sawbone models, including:
o Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS) principles
o Ankle ORIF and small fragment fixation
o External fixation
o Tension band wiring
• Recognise appropriate indications and limitations of common fixation methods
Curriculum
The course aligns with the Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery curriculum, including:
• Principles of fracture fixation
• Basic operative skills
• Safe participation in trauma theatre
• Early surgical decision-making
