Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Course
This two-day workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to oncoplastic surgical techniques and reconstruction, excluding free tissue transfer.
Day 1 focuses on supervised cadaveric dissection, offering delegates hands-on experience in key operative techniques.
Day 2 centres on operative video demonstrations and live model marking sessions, enabling participants to develop practical skills in surgical planning and oncoplastic marking.
The course will cover the below, as listed in the curriculum of general surgery, with special interest in breast surgery:
- Oncoplastic breast conservation surgery techniques
- Implant based / Assisted reconstruction
- Pedicled autogenous and implant assisted Latissimus Dorsi flap
- Bilateral breast reductions
- Therapeutic mammoplasty
- Raising and using local perforator flaps
Suitability
This course is aimed at Surgical Trainees ST6 to ST8, Staff Grade Surgeons and Consultants, with an interest in Breast Surgery.
Course Format
Day 1 will comprise a series of expert-led presentations and interactive tutorials delivered by faculty. These sessions will be complemented by supervised, hands-on cadaveric dissection, enabling delegates to practise and refine key surgical techniques in a structured learning environment.
Day 2 will focus on oncoplastic surgical procedures, featuring live operative demonstrations via curated surgical video content. This will be accompanied by structured marking-up sessions, during which delegates will have the opportunity to practise pre-operative planning and procedural markings on volunteer models under faculty guidance.
Course Aims
To equip delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to develop and safely incorporate oncoplastic breast surgery techniques into their clinical practice.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:
- Describe the principles underpinning oncoplastic breast surgery (excluding free tissue transfer).
- Demonstrate key operative techniques through supervised cadaveric dissection.
- Interpret operative video demonstrations to enhance procedural understanding.
- Perform accurate pre-operative planning and surgical marking for a range of oncoplastic procedures.
- Apply decision-making principles to appropriate patient selection and technique choice.
