RCSEd Cadaveric Major Open Abdominal Surgery Course

This course will provide comprehensive and condensed learning experience to compensate for the progressive reduction in the time spent by trainees in theatre as well as the decrease in the numbers of open procedures in general surgery.

Please Note: Full Places have been booked. Delegates can still sign up for a Full Place on the RCSEd Cadaveric Intermediate Open Abdominal Course, with the option to book an Assisting Place on this course (RCSEd Cadaveric Major Open Abdominal Surgery). To book an Observer Place on the course (FY1 & FY2 and 4th, 5th & 6th Year Medical Students), please email: education@rcsed.ac.uk.

Delegates signed up as assistant will have the chance to be the first assistant in the following procedures: segmental colectomy, perforated peptic ulcer, bleedic peptic ulcer and splenectomy. Delegates will have an understanding of the surgical anatomy related to the procedure, operative steps and the principles of how to perform the procedure safely.  Once you have booked onto this course, you will be expected to send a copy of your consolidated e-LogBook to: education@rcsed.ac.uk.  The Course Director will then review your e-LogBook for suitability to attend and we will be in touch to advise whether you have been accepted.  If unsuccessful, your fees will be fully refunded.  Please be aware that if you do not send a copy of your consolidated e-LogBook within 2 weeks, you will be cancelled from the course.  If you are having problems accessing your e-LogBook, please communicate this to us.

Suitability

Medical Student, FY1, FY2, Core Trainees, ST1, ST2, ST3 to ST6 (or equivalent).

Course Format

Short presentations followed by practical hands-on workstations - performing open surgical procedures on cadavers under direct supervision.

Course Objectives

The course aims to address the gap in the market for courses covering intermediate and major open abdominal procedures. In the past, there was no need for this type of course as trainees acquired the necessary skills through 'apprenticeships' and long hours of training. This course will aid the current training model.

Learning Outcomes

After having attended this course participants will have the knowledge and skills required to perform the following surgical procedures under supervision:

  • Segmental colectomy
  • Perforated peptic ulcer and bleeding peptic ulcer
  • Splenectomy
