On the 29 August to 9 September 2022, our Organisation Member, The Emergency Department of Bern University Hospital hosted a Summer School on Refugee and Migrant Health.

This was a unique opportunity to impart specialist knowledge to help prepare health professionals for the challenges in treating patients with a migration background.

Over the two weeks, participants had the opportunity to listen to a series of lectures, partake in discussions and learning scenarios with international experts across several different healthcare disciplines. This cumulated in the planning of public health projects which were presented to an expert panel who provided valuable feedback.

The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare was delighted to sponsor the Summer School and Symposium through offering free student membership to students who presented the most feasible public health project on health intervention on the polio outbreak in Pakistan.

Congratulations to the following students:

  • Silvana Larrea Schiavon - Physician from Mexico, MPH, Doctor of Public Health Student, University of California-Berkeley
  • Seyedahmad Banihashem Rad - Dentist from Iran, Ph.D. student at oral public health at Bern dental school (ZMK)
  • Dr Aoife Kirk - Physician from Ireland, MB BCh BAO MPH

Among the numerous speakers and contributors to the Summer School were Professor Tony Redmond and Professor Teodoro Forcht-Dagi; members of the FRRHH Executive Committee and Interim Faculty Advisory Board respectively.

Following the Symposium on the theme ‘Humanitarian Aid in Times of Crisis’, Professor Redmond stated:

This was an important meeting that brought together humanitarian workers from around the world to learn from each other and increase their knowledge and skills. It chimed very closely with the work and aims of the Faculty and symbolised our ongoing collaboration.

FRRHH and Migration and Refugee Health are extremely grateful to Professor Tony Redmond and Professor Teodoro Forcht-Dagi for their excellent support of the event which was appreciated by all who attended.

Speaking about the event, Co-Ordinator, Dr Anne Jachmann stated:

The past two weeks have been very inspiring. It was great to see that so many participants and experts from all over the world have participated and exchanged experience and knowledge and it emphasized the need for additional training opportunities for health professionals in the field of humanitarian aid and migration and refugee health. Thank you for the great support and collaboration with the Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare!
