Emergency and Urgent Dental Care in Remote and Rural Areas - 1 November

We are delighted to be hosting a webinar on Wednesday 1 November at 18:00 BST examining dentistry in remote and rural areas as we seek to expand the awareness and understanding of dental and oral care in remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare settings.

The webinar will provide an overview of common oral and dental problems that can present in remote and rural areas. It will highlight the recognition of conditions that require emergency and urgent care and those that may be managed conservatively.

Are We Deluded To Aspire To The Same Mental Health Outcomes Wherever We Live? - 25 July

We are delighted to host a webinar on Tuesday 25 July at 19:00 BST discussing the latest report on rural mental health from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee.

Following concerns identified about gaps in rural mental health, MPs on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee embarked on a wide-ranging inquiry into rural mental health in November 2021. The report of that inquiry was published in May 2023.

In this webinar, a panel of experts will discuss its findings and look to how services might respond to it.

Fellowship Fund Project Updates - Webinar Miniseries - 2023

Our new webinar miniseries, provides the opportunity for the recipients of the FRRHH Fellowship Fund 2021 to deliver updates on their projects; including the impact of their project in local areas, how their work has helped their career, and how the funding from the Faculty has helped their work. Each webinar will be hosted by a member of the FRRHH Executive Committee and focus on different projects that were awarded funding.

Bermuda: The Opportunities & Challenges for National Digital Health Strategies in Small Island States - 28 June

We are delighted to deliver our next joint webinar with organsiation member Interactive Health on Wednesday 28 June. Delivered in partnership with the University of Edinburgh, this webinar focuses on digital health and a recently commissioned assessment in Bermuda.

This webinar presents the findings from a recent digital health maturity assessment performed in Bermuda and how those findings can extrapolate to small island countries.

Community and Collaboration: Up-Skilling and Empowering Local Volunteers - 15 May

On Monday 15 May at 19:00 BST, we are pleased to be collaborating with dental training charity, Bridge2Aid to present another insightful webinar.

What Do You Need to be a Rural Generalist Medical Practitioner? - 27 April 

Join us on Thursday 27 April at 19:00 BST for the second installment of our new webinar series.

Our expert panelists will explain what you need to be a Rural Generalist Medical Practitioner. There will be discussions of non-clinical aspects, examples of best practice, and we will explore how the FRRHH and the Capabilities Framework could help address the challenges regularly faced by General Practitioners in remote, rural and island settings.

Global Trauma Care in Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare - 25 April 

We will return with a brand new series of webinars on Tuesday 25 April at 16:00 BST.

The first of the new series will be delivered in partnership with the Primary Trauma Care Foundation (PTCF) and will focus on Global Trauma Care in Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare. The sessions will examine the challenges faced in low resource settings and attendees will hear updates on best practice using PTCF's sustainable training model which has been delivered worldwide.

AFSM Tripartite Conference 2022

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is delighted to be partnering with the Ministry of Health in Malaysia and the Academy for Silent Mentor to deliver the AFSM Tripartite Conference 2022.

The conference will take place in Malaysia from 14 – 16 December on the theme of healthcare challenges in the 21st century, covering topics such as the impact of the pandemic to challenges of practicing in remote and rural areas.

The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare will be in attendance to discuss what improvement can be made to support individuals living and working in remote, rural, and life-threatening areas of the world. 

 

Migration Health: From Challenges to Collaborations - 15 November

We are looking forward to hosting our first webinar with FRRHH Organisation Member, The University Hospital of Bern on Tuesday 15 November at 19:00 GMT.

The session will provide an introduction to the basics of migration and refugee health. There will also be discussions on the opportunities, challenges, and limitations of collaborations within this field.

The Virtual Doctors: Developing a Sustainable Telemedicine Service in Rural Africa - 7 November 

We were pleased to host our first webinar with The Virtual Doctors on Monday 7 November.  

The Virtual Doctors are the UK's leading telemedicine charity for primary healthcare and they deliver their services in Malawi and Zambia.

There was a presentation on the use of telemedicine in low resource settings and discussions on the challenges faced through using this platform.

49th Annual Viking Surgeons Association Conference 

We were delighted to support the Viking Surgeons Association on the return of their annual conference on the Isle of Skye from 2 – 4 November.

There were a variety of sessions ranging from Urology in the Wild to Paediatric Orthopaedics and Trauma. We were pleased to be exhibiting at the conference and enjoyed speaking with delegates about the Faculty.

Governance of Healthcare Innovation in Brazil - 31 August

Interactive Health Ltd returned for another webinar on Wednesday 31 August.

The evening explored the governance of healthcare innovation in Brazil with panelists sharing their expertise on designing and implementing digital health systems and interventions.

Migrants Moving through Mexico and their Access to Health and Social Services Webinar - 30 June

On Thursday 30 Junewe were delighted to host a webinar in partnership with our first organisation member, Interactive Health Ltd.

Attendees learned how the IHL team worked with NGOs, academia, and local government to support migrants in transit through Mexico, examining their health and social care access during the pandemic.

Viking Surgeons Association: Skin Cancer Management by the Generalist Webinar - 29 June

On Wednesday 29 June, we hosted the latest instalment of our rural surgery webinar series.

This webinar focused on the management of skin cancer and explored models of care delivery in a rural or generalist setting. Attendees learned how to recognise and differentiate common presentations of skin cancer in addition to describing the management principles in treating it.

Rethinking Remote 2022

We were pleased to attend and exhibit at the Rethinking Remote Conference in Aviemore, Scotland. The conference took place from 28 - 29 April 2022 and was open to all with an interest in remote and rural health and wellbeing.

The conference hosted a number of international speakers and experts within the field. We also delivered a workshop on the Capabilities Framework.

 

Viking Surgeons Association: Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Update Webinar - 26 April

On Tuesday 26 April at 19:00 BST we were excited to launch a new series of webinars in partnership with the Viking Surgeons Association. This webinar provided healthcare professionals working in rural locations with updates and advice on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy practice. At the end of the webinar participants gained knowledge of how to describe, the pathophysiology of Barrett’s oesophagus, a pathway in upper gastrointestinal bleeding management amongst other procedures.

World Extreme Medicine Conference 2021 

Joining some of the most influential individuals and organisations in extreme medicine, and building on relationships formed at last year’s online conference, we exhibited at our first in-person event attending the 2021 World Extreme Medicine Conference in November. As the world’s only global conference on the subject, the faculty team, along with Executive Committee Members Andy Kent and Professor Tony Redmond met Faculty members, shared updates on the Faculty, and introduced the Faculty to a diverse pool of delegates from across the full breadth of extreme medicine, encompassing humanitarian, disaster relief, expedition, space, military, tactical and performance medical backgrounds.

 

FRRHH Capabilities Framework Webinar  - 22 September

On Wednesday 22 September, we hosted an interactive webinar on the FRRHH Capabilities Framework. The panel featured experts and leaders from across the field of remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare who provided an overview on the development of the capabilities framework and how this can support healthcare professionals within this sector. 

There was an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and share their feedback on the framework.

48th Viking Surgeons Association: Virtual Annual Conference - 9 September

On Thursday 9 September the 48th Viking Surgeons Association: Virtual Annual Conference took place online for the second year running. The event consisted of four key sessions led by experts within the field of remote and rural surgery.

Whether you are a student or an established surgeon, there are great lessons to be learned to improve the standard of rural healthcare for patients and to support practitioners.

Other Surgical Specialties Emergencies in the Rural Unit - Neurosurgery 

On Wednesday 26 May, we hosted a webinar on neurosurgery in the rural unit in partnership with The Viking Surgeons Association.

This one - hour webinar updated general surgeons working in remote areas on the topics of spinal injuries and intracranial injuries. The session reviewed recognition of injuries, resuscitation, appropriate and timely investigation, stabilisation for transfer (if appropriate and available) and options for operative management.

Ophthalmology for the Rural Surgeon

On Tuesday 27 April, we hosted a webinar on the topic of Ophthalmology in partnership with The Viking Surgeons Association. 

The panel discussion focused on conditions affecting the majority world such as ocular infections and the safe management of trauma and simple tumours. Techniques on how to remove an eye was shared as well as a presentation on the Arclight Ophthalmoscope and its purpose in helping to prevent blindness.

Approaches to Training for Humanitarian Deployment

Following the successful launch of our Introduction to Humanitarian Healthcare Online Course in partnership with UK-Med, we were pleased to present our latest humanitarian webinar on Wednesday 14 April.

The evening explored approaches to training when preparing for international deployment with discussions led by a panel of specialists within the field of emergency medicine and humanitarian healthcare.

General Surgery Subspecialties in the Rural Unit - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

                                                         

On Wednesday 31 March our webinar in partnership with The Viking Surgeons Association discussed common presentations of plastic surgery cases, including: hand injuries, burn injuries and skin lesions. The focus was on acute management and when to refer to specialist centres.                                                                                                           

The evening consisted of lectures, case discussions and a Q&A session.

Rural Orthopaedics 

On Wednesday 24 February, we hosted our webinar in collaboration with The Viking Surgeons Association on the topic of Orthopaedic Surgery. 

The discussion points for the evening were:

  • Proximal Humeral Fractures
  • Wrist Fractures
  • Bone and Joint Infection 

This webinar is suitable for anyone with an interest in orthopaedic surgery within the rural unit.

Humanitarian Healthcare - What I Wish I Had Known

On Wednesday 27 January, we hosted our first humanitarian webinar of 2021 ahead of our Introduction to Humanitarian Online Course launching soon.

This was an insightful evening providing an opportunity to hear from experienced humanitarian healthcare professionals who shared their expertise and ‘what they wished they had known’ before their first humanitarian deployment.

This webinar is suitable for anyone interested in humanitarian healthcare and all specialties and career grades are welcome.

Thriving and Surviving in Remote & Rural General Surgery 

Our first webinar of 2021 in partnership with The Viking Surgeons Association took place on Tuesday 26 January. There were panel discussions relating to the theme of 'thriving and surviving in remote and rural general surgery' including:

  • keeping up with current practice in different specialties
  • operating on friends, people close to you and relatives 
  • dealing with complications and much more

General Surgery Subspecialties in the Rural Unit - Gastroenterology

Our final webinar of 2020 in partnership with The Viking Surgeons Association took take place on Thursday 10th December.

We had three short update presentations on gastroenterology topics where management of patients has changed significantly in the last decade including:

  • Large or suspicious colorectal polyps
  • Acute upper GI bleeding
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Surgical Specialty Emergencies in the Rural Unit - ENT

During our webinar in partnership with The Viking Surgeons Association on Wednesday 25 November we explored the management of Ears, Nose and Throat Surgical emergencies in the remote and rural setting. 

This webinar discussed the main life-threatening emergencies encountered in ENT including: epistaxis, post-operative bleeding and airway problems.

Hosted by Bridge2Aid in partnership with ProDental CPD, this inaugural e-conference focused on sustainability, challenges, innovations and improvements within remote and rural healthcare and featured an esteemed panel of speakers from five different continents. 

Bridge2Aid exist with the aim to strengthen local healthcare provisions and eliminate suffering for billions of people in the developing world due to a lack of access to emergency care by offering training to rural-based health workers and equipping them with necessary resources.

The Faculty of Remote, Rural & Humanitarian Healthcare (FRRHH) were delighted to support this conference with representatives from the Faculty’s Executive Committee, who delivered sessions on the following topics:

  • The Future For Remote Practitioners is Bright: Improving Health Outcomes Globally - Great Health Anywhere                                     
  • Delivering Remote, Rural & Humanitarian Healthcare - The Challenges

Combining Remote & Rural Surgery with Humanitarian Healthcare

During our webinar on Tuesday 20 October, we examined different aspects of combining rural surgery in a humanitarian healthcare setting. Speakers included: David Sedgwick, discussing the practicalities and benefits of volunteering for humanitarian work, David Wightwick, who gave an overview of UK-Med / UKEMT and David Nott who provided an overview of the David Nott Foundation and specifically the DNF HEST course.

Viking Surgeons Association Virtual Conference 2020

The Viking Surgeons Association (VSA) Annual Conference 2020 hosted by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare (FRRHH) took place as three, one-hour long webinars on the evenings of Tuesday 15th to Thursday 17th September 2020.

Each one-hour webinar included topics under the headings: ‘Trauma in Rural Areas’, ‘Tips and Tricks for the Rural General Surgeon’ and ‘How do we Train a Rural General Surgeon?’. The aim was to provide a programme of interest to Rural General Surgeons in the UK, trainees in general surgery, and the many rural surgeons practicing throughout the world.

The Viking Surgeons Association is comprised of surgeons working in remote areas of Scotland and Nordic Countries and it is hoped during this series to forge links and discuss problems relevant to rural surgeons throughout the world.

The Faculty of Remote and Rural Healthcare 2019 November Workshop

 

The Faculty formerly known as FRRH, held an informative event about the various activities taking place within the Faculty and how people could be involved and support the development of FRRH and remote and rural healthcare globally. The event was hosted by FRRHH Chair, Dr Rikard Moen, Chief Medical Officer at Optima Health and supported by former FRRH Chair, Alistair Fraser, VP of Health, Shell.

The event served as a working meeting to gather feedback and input for the creation of the FRRH Capabilities Framework. This framework will deliver the following;

  • Provide a description of the scope of practice and capabilities required of those working in clinical roles in remote and rural contexts e.g. for healthcare organizations and their employees
  • Provide a foundation against which training providers can align course development for remote and rural health care professionals
  • Act as a basis for development of clinical examinations in remote and rural healthcare.

The Faculty was delighted to welcome three world renowned remote and rural healthcare speakers who discussed the challenges and successes they experienced in remote and rural healthcare. The event speakers are three advocates of the professional diversity that the Faculty looks to support in developing remote and rural healthcare. Each speaker listed below discussed the challenges to healthcare faced within their respective arenas.

IHL works with expert healthcare practitioners and academics to develop smart mobile health programmes. These incorporate machine learning and are secured using blockchain.

We are developing  "Well@Work" (Occupational Health) and "Well@Practice" (Supporting Multi-Disciplinary Healthcare teams at remote locations}  as innovative smart prescriptions for active health. The incorporation of personalised life-long health pathways and a new rewards platform aims to motivate users to keep returning to them.

 

FRRH 12th November Drinks Reception

The FRRH Executive Committee were delighted to host an evening of informal networking on the evening of the 12th November, in the historic RCSEd Fellows Library.
