Overview
Stroke survivors face significant challenges in maintaining oral health due to mobility issues, manual dexterity, dysphagia, cognitive impairment, and reduced oro-muscular tone. This can lead to significant dental disease as well as systemic complications, including aspiration pneumonia and malnutrition, which impact quality of life. This webinar aims to discuss the challenges in providing dental care and explore barriers experienced by these patients.
Aims
- Discuss the various risks in providing dental treatment for stroke survivors
- To explore barriers to care experienced by this cohort of patients.
Learning Objectives
- Risk assess appropriately when providing dental care for stroke patients and refer when required
- Treatment plan pragmatically and safely
- Understand barriers faced and how reasonable adjustments can be put in place to negate these.

Panellists
Our panellists include:
- Laura McKay - Specialist in Special Care Dentistry, currently working within the Community Dental Service (Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust).
Graduated from Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2015, and completed posts in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatrics, Special Care, Community Dental Services and Dental Public Health. I worked as a Dental Officer in the CDS and Prison Services, as well as working as a Specialty Doctor in OMFS prior to completing my StR training in Special Care Dentistry in Liverpool. I have a keen interest in education, having completed a PGCert and in my current role act as clinical and education supervisor for DCTs and StRs in SCD. I have been involved with RCS Edinburgh in various roles including the RCSEd SCD Advisory Board, sat my SCD Diploma and Membership exams with the college, and most recently undertook their Future Leaders Programme for Surgeons.

Ms Rebecca Iles, Consultant in Special Care Dentistry.
Rebecca is a Consultant at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. She graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2014, and after working in OMFS, restorative and community dentistry, undertook an MSc in Special Care Dentistry (SCD) alongside Specialist training which she completed in 2021. She is on the executive committee for the British Society of SCD, the RCSEd SCD Advisory Board, Chair of The Sedation Network Meeting, an RCSEd examiner and involved in teaching at Peninsula School of Dentistry
