7th October 2025, 19:00 to 20:00 BST

Overview

The BSSCD guideline ‘Supporting Access to oral health care and dental treatment for people with severe mental illness’ was launched in December 2024. It provides practical and theoretical information for mental health teams and dental teams to support them in collaborative working to provide better oral health for patients with debilitating mental health issues. This webinar highlights features of the guideline such as oral health prevention, preparation for dental appointments (including risk assessments) and developing closer working with psychiatric services to support patients.

Aims

  • To introduce the audience to the BSSCD guideline ‘Supporting Access to oral health care and dental treatment for people with severe mental illness (SMI)’. Covering oral health prevention, supporting access to dental care for people with SMI, treatment planning and risk assessment, this guideline provides both theoretical knowledge and practical guidance for both dental and psychiatric teams to better support people with SMI to get improved oral health outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  • Adapt the patient centred framework described in the guideline to their patient group
  • Liaise more effectively with psychiatric teams to ensure that patients with SMI have multi-disciplinary care planning
