Viking Surgeons Association Annual Conference 2022 - Thursday 3rd November

The Viking Surgeons Association (VSA) is a long-established network of surgeons connected with the care of rural patients in the UK and Nordic countries. Their meetings rotate through different rural locations, and this year the VSA are delighted to be travelling to the beautiful Isle of Skye where the conference will be held at the scenic venue of An Crubh.
There is an exciting line-up of speakers on a variety of topics with excellent opportunities for networking with other like-minded individuals. Andy Kent, Deputy Chair of the Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare, will be speaking at the conference, and the Faculty will be exhibiting also.
The social programme begins on Wednesday 2nd November, with a scientific programme taking place on Thursday 3rd - Friday 4th November. Details of the social and scientific programmes, prices and registration for in-person attendance are available on the VSA registration page here.

Aims
- To update knowledge and skills for rural surgeons practicing in remote areas in the subspecialities of urology, hand surgery, pelvic floor dysfunction, pediatric surgery, trauma and disaster planning.
- To provide a social and educational venue for networking between ruralists and tertiary care surgeons and ancillary practitioners.
- To promote CPD for practicing surgeons and education for trainees in an effort to improve the standards and the delivery of care in remote and rural areas
- To advocate for improved rural services for patients and address the changing workforce needs in the communities.

Panellists
Our panellists include:
- Mr Bruce Tulloh, MS, FRACS, FRCSEd. Western Isles. Mr Tulloh trained in Melbourne, Australia and worked as one of two consultant general surgeons in the rural town of Echuca for 10 years before moving to Edinburgh in 2002 where he was a consultant in the Upper GI Surgery unit until the end of 2021. There he developed his interest in hernia surgery, both open and laparoscopic. In January of this year he moved to Stornoway where he is now one of two general surgeons again.
- Ms Cathie King, Colorectal/Stoma CNS, Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. Miss King qualified as RGN at North Lothian College for Nursing in 1989. She has a BSc in Professional Practice (2008) and PG Cert. in Advanced Nursing Practice (2014). Her career has centered on stoma care since 1998, initially in NHS Lothian and then Raigmore Hospital in 2002 where she took on a new dual role post as Colorectal/Stoma CNS. She works in a small team providing specialist care and support to people with stoma and/or colorectal disease throughout NHS Highland and across acute and primary care sectors.
- Mr Rob Mason, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Mr Mason is a newly appointed consultant urologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with an interest in core urology and prostate cancer diagnostics. Prior to his appointment he spent 18 years as a consultant in Devon where along with core urology he developed a practice in pelvic cancer surgery, latterly in robotics. In Aberdeen he is developing a Holmium laser prostate enucleation service (HoLEP) and has a vision to streamline the investigation of male urinary tract symptoms into a one stop clinic. He lives in Stonehaven with his wife Gemma. They enjoy walking, woodland and mountain vistas, and shortbread biscuits. He is also a keen salmon fisherman. Of course, none of this influenced his change in employment!
- Mr Sinan Khadhouri, Urology Registrar East of Scotland, Lead for #IDENTIFY Study, PhD University of Aberdeen, Co-Chair of @BURSTurology, Associated Specialty Surgical Lead RCS. Mr Khadhouri is an Academic Urology registrar in the east of scotland, having recently completed his PhD at university of Aberdeen. He worked as a surgical registrar in St Francis Hospital, Katete, Zambia for 6 months.
- Prof Kenneth G Walker, Colorectal/PF Surgeon Inverness, NHS Highland. Associate Dean & IST Simulation Lead, NHS Educn Scotland. Chair of CoSMoS grp & co-lead NoTSS Intnl Courses grp, RCSEd, Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. Kenneth Walker is a former colorectal and general surgeon from Inverness, now specialising part-time in pelvic floor surgery and endoscopy, alongside education roles. He enjoys working from Wick and Fort William as well as Inverness. He is an Associate Dean and Simulation Lead for Core Surgical Training in Scotland, and he co-leads the Highland Academic Surgical Unit (with research interests in novel training modalities). With the RCSEd, Ken chairs the CoSMoS group (consultation skills training) and the NOTSS International courses subgroup (non-technical skills training). Ken previously worked in semi-rural Nepal and still travels with small teams on surgical training projects in Nepal and Palestine.
- Tracey Sturgeon, BSc. (Hons.) MSc. MBChB DFSRH MRCOG, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Honorary Senior Lecturer - Aberdeen University, School of Medicine, Specialist Paralegal - Reparation Law, Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. Tracey Sturgeon is originally from the Isle of Bute and did undergrad degree in Dundee and MSc at University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. She then went to Glasgow for medical school and did speciality training in O and G in Aberdeen. Since 2018 she has been a consultant at Raigmore with special interest in consent issues and post-reproductive health. Her other roles include department lead for Labour Ward and lead for Risk Management. She also continues to make a mark in her ongoing research interests around consent and endometriosis.
- Piers Renshaw, MBChB, BSc (Hons), FRCS (T and O). Mr Renshaw is a general Orthopaedic surgeon with a subspeciality interest in Paediatric orthopaedics. He has worked as a consultant in Raigmore hospital since 2003, and enjoys fly fishing and writing. He is currently working on a children’s book.
- Mr Andrew Kent, Inverness, Raigmore Hospital. Following 18-years' service in the RAMC, Mr Kent moved to Inverness in 2002 and has been based there since - as a consultant trauma & orthopaedic surgeon. He remains very active in the field of humanitarian healthcare and is vice-chair of the Faculty of Remote, Rural & Humanitarian Healthcare (FRRHH) at the RCSEd and is the surgical lead for UK-Med. He is also a medical advisor to the HALO Trust, the PTC Foundation and WHO. In the last year he has deployed to Somalia, Yemen and Ukraine and so feels reasonably well prepared for a visit to the Isle of Skye!!
