Viking Surgeons Association: Other Surgical Specialties Emergencies in the Rural Unit – Neurosurgery

Overview
The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare have partnered with the Viking Surgeons Association (VSA) to deliver a series of webinars focused on Rural Surgery.
This one-hour webinar aims to update general surgeons working in remote areas on the topics of spinal injuries and intracranial injuries. It will include recognition of injuries, resuscitation, appropriate and timely investigation, stabilisation for transfer (if appropriate & available) and options for operative management. This is for the surgeon at the District General Hospital with a significant transfer time to a neurosurgical unit, as well as surgeons in remote areas with longer transfer times or no transfer options at all.

Chair: Mr Gordon McFarlane, ChM FRCS
Bio: Gordon is a Consultant Surgeon in Lerwick, Shetland Islands. He worked for 9 years as a Surgeon in Chogoria, Kenya, a 300-bed rural church hospital. Whilst there he undertook a ChM thesis on H. Pylori and gastric cancer. On returning to the UK, Gordon spent 4 years on the West of Scotland training rotation in general surgery, the last year of which he was as a Rural Surgical Trainee with the North of Scotland Deanery. He was appointed to Gilbert Bain Hospital, Shetland in 2004. A Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa, and a member of the Viking Surgeons Association, Gordon maintains an interest in rural surgical training and surgery in Africa.
Speaker 1: Mr Peter Bodkin BSc, MBChB, FRCS(NS)
Title of presentation: Spinal Injuries
Bio: Mr Bodkin is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Clinical Lead for neurosurgery in Aberdeen. He trained on the East of Scotland rotation and went on to do a complex spine fellowship in Dublin. He enjoys a varied practice across the spectrum of neurosurgical disorders but has a special interest in complex spine and facial pain. He is heavily involved in neurosurgical training and is chairman of the STC for neurosurgery in Scotland.
Speaker 2: Mr Pragnesh Bhatt MS, MCh, FRCS, FEBNS, FFSTEd
Title of Presentation: Craniotomies in the Hands of Generalists
Bio: Pragnesh Bhatt qualified as a neurosurgeon in 1987 and has been trained in India as well as UK. His practice has predominantly been General Neurosurgery covering breadth of adult as well as paediatric conditions. In addition to his lifelong passion in spinal surgery he received University Hospital Fellowship in Complex Spinal Surgery.
Currently working at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary as a Senior Consultant in Neurosurgery along with his role as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen. He has taken interest in multidisciplinary team approach to degenerative spinal conditions. His interests also cover micro-neurosurgery, neuroanatomy along with medical education and training.
