Overview

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is a core provision of rural healthcare services, and a major area of work for rural hospital practitioners. This one hour webinar will offer expert updates in topics commonly encountered in rural hospital practice: Barrett’s oesophagus, upper gastrointestinal bleeding and PEG tube management. We are delighted to host three experienced consultants as our faculty: consultant UGI surgeon Mr Paul Glen (Queen Elizabeth Universith Hospital, Glasgow), and consultant gastroenterologists Dr Adrian Stanley (Glasgow Royal Infirmary) and Dr Alastair McKinlay (Aberdeen Royal Infirmary).

Aims

This webinar will provide healthcare practitioners with updates in current thinking and best practice in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy practice, focused on commonly encountered topics.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the pathophysiology of Barrett’s oesophagus, best practice in organisation of surveillance programmes and technical expectations in completion of endoscopic surveillance.
  • Describe a pathway in upper gastrointestinal bleeding management, including indication for endoscopic involvement, and endoscopic techniques for attaining haemostasis.
  • Describe the variables necessary to consider when evaluating a patient for PEG tube placement, the technical considerations in PEG tube placement and in problem-solving subsequent issues.

 

Panellists

Our panellists include:

  • Mr Stuart Fergusson (Chair)Rural Surgical Fellow, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Mr Stuart Fergusson is a Colorectal and General Surgeon who qualified from the University of Glasgow in 2006 and is currently undertaking a post-CCT Rural Surgical Fellowship at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, prior to commencing a consultant appointment with NHS Shetland.
  • Mr Paul Glen - Paul Glen is an upper GI surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with an interest in premalignant disease. He has been involved in the setup of a national registry of Barretts cases for Scotland and the role out of cytosponge, leading for Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
  • Professor Adrian StanleyConsultant Gastroenterologist, Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Dr Adrian Stanley graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1988 and trained in Edinburgh, New Zealand, Australia and London. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed publications, mostly in the fields of GI bleeding and hepatology, and has co-authored several national and international guidelines. He has been Vice-President (Medical) of the RCPSG since 2019 and Senior Secretary of the British Society of Gastroenterology since 2021.
  • Dr Alastair McKinlay - Dr Alastair McKinlay is a Consultant Gastroenterologist with a sub speciality interest in nutrition, at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. He is also physician to the Eden Unit at Royal Cornhill Hospital Aberdeen, the specialist inpatient eating disorders unit for the North of Scotland Managed Clinical Network for Eating Disorders. His undergraduate training was at Edinburgh University, with postgraduate training in Edinburgh, Birmingham, Glasgow and Aberdeen. President of the British Society of Gastroenterology.
