COSMOS Module B - the conversations when it's "all going wrong"

- And how we teach difficult communication skills

13th May 2025, 19:00 to 20:30 BST

Overview

These webinars are condensed episodes from RCSEd’s COSMOS (Consultant Skills that Matter for Surgeons) programme, modular training days in Consultation Skills. They cover the subject and showcase our training methods.

Module B covers the difficult conversations when complications and adverse events occur.

  • Caring for a patient when “it’s gone wrong”
  • The recovery phase – “seeing them through”
  • A patient’s story
  • Safety 1 thinking – the Morbidity and Mortality or SAER meeting
  • Responding to complaints
  • Peer support for surgeons as “2nd casualties”

We’ll use video clips, with panel and audience commentary, to build lists of tips and pitfalls. Previous participants will describe what they’d learned from simulations.

Aims

  • To show options for how to train surgeons in challenging communication skills.
  • To improve our own handling of communication with patients after adverse events and complications.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Redesign their own education of trainees in communication skills
  • List tips and pitfalls for caring for patients in the phases after an adverse event or complication
  • Describe the purpose and types of adverse event reviews
  • Recognise the impact of adverse events on surgeons and describe basic peer support.
