Surgical Safety in Practice: Risk Management and the WHO Checklist

Overview
This webinar will provide review of the impact of the WHO checklist including its purpose and the mechanism through with it improves care. In addition, we will summarise the effect the checklist has had on patient outcomes worldwide. We will review the opportunities the checklist provides to enhance team performance and the future capabilities of the checklist in an evolving health system. The specific approach to checklist re-implementation will, likewise, be discussed.
Aims
To enhance participants’ ability to reduce risk and improve outcomes through evidence-based use of the WHO Safe Surgical Checklist and stronger safety culture.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to critically appraise principles of surgical safety and risk management, describe the purpose and evidence base for the WHO Safe Surgical Checklist, and apply practical strategies to enhance teamwork, communication, and reliability in the operating theatre to improve patient outcomes.
Panellists
Professor Mary Brindle
Professor of Surgery and Professor of Community Health Sciences as well as Director of Ariadne Labs, Harvard School of Public Health. Leader in the field of surgical safety and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).
Manoj Kumar
Education Lead for the Patient Safety Group and Course Director for the Team-Based Quality Reviews (TBQR) Course at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, where he also serves as a Regional Surgical Ambassador.
He is a faculty member and Convenor for the Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) course. He is a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon and Associate Director of Medical Education at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
