Overview
This interactive webinar will explore the recognition and management of common bariatric emergencies, aimed at general and bariatric surgeons across the UK. Topics will include early and late complications such as leaks, bleeding, obstruction, internal hernia, and band-related emergencies, as well as the critical role of radiology in diagnosis. Speakers will share practical decision-making strategies, operative insights (including the role of robotics), and imaging pearls. The session will conclude with a Q&A to address real-world challenges.
Aims
To enhance the knowledge and skills of surgeons in recognising, investigating, and managing bariatric surgical emergencies, integrating both surgical and radiological perspectives.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:
- Recognise the key early and late complications following bariatric surgery, including band-related emergencies.
- Interpret radiological findings and identify imaging pitfalls in bariatric emergencies.
- Apply evidence-based decision-making in the management of leaks, bleeding, obstruction, and internal hernia.
- Understand the potential role of robotic surgery in managing bariatric complications.
- Implement practical approaches to emergency bariatric cases in both specialist and non-specialist centres.

Our panellists include:

Dr Varun Chillal - Consultant radiologist at University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). Special interest in UGI radiology.

Mr Kalid Akbari - Consultant oesophagogastric and bariatric surgeon at University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). Laparoscopic and robotic surgeon. Primary bariatric and revisional procedures.

Ms Negar Moody - Miss Negar Moody MBBS BSc FRCS. Post-CCT bariatric surgery fellow at Phoenix Health. Former trainee in the West Midlands deanery, with a special interest in laparoscopic bariatric, hiatal and benign UGI surgery and a passion for surgical education.

Mr Mohamed Issa (Moderator) - ST6 Upper GI Registrar, West Midland Deanery. A Specialist Registrar in Upper GI Surgery with interests in bariatric, foregut, and abdominal wall reconstruction surgery. Mohamed is the Social Media Lead for the Moynihan Academy and serves on the ASGBI Training & Education and EDI Committees, with a strong focus on surgical education and trainee development.
