Endocrine Surgery for the FRCS

Overview
This focused webinar is part of a monthly series developed in collaboration with the ASGBI, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Specialty Sub-Board (SSB), and the Trainee Committee. It is designed to support those preparing for the General Surgery FRCS Exam. The webinar will provide an overview of Endocrine Surgery for the exam focusing on the assessment and management of thyroid nodules and adrenal masses. The discussion will explore the role of imaging, and indications, risks and benefits for surgical intervention.
Aims
Enable trainees to assess and manage thyroid nodules and adrenal masses, understand the indications for surgical and non-surgical management, and apply this knowledge effectively in the FRCS exam setting.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:
- Understand and recognise the key principles of assessing thyroid nodules, including clinical presentation, biochemical markers, cytology and ultrasound risk stratification.
- Understand and recognise the key principles of assessing adrenal masses, including imaging and biochemical markers
- Evaluate the indications for surgical versus non-surgical management of thyroid and adrenal conditions based on current guidelines and best practice.
- Apply knowledge to FRCS-style clinical and viva questions on endocrine surgery, demonstrating structured responses and critical reasoning.
- Describe the role of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) in the decision-making process for complex endocrine cases.
