The Jaundiced Patient

Overview
Jaundice is a common clinical presentation. How do I decide if the patient has a problem that requires a surgeons or a physicians help? Are there any red flags in the presentation, examination and investigations I should not miss? What investigations should happen first? There seem to be so many options for imaging these patients, how do I pick the right one?

Mr Michael Silva
Michael Silva is a Consultant Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic (HPB) and General Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Mr Silva is the Training Programme Director for Higher Surgical Trainees (General Surgery) in the Oxford Deanery and also is Director of the Surgical Advisory Network in the UK for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was a Regional Surgical Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for Oxfordshire from 2013-2017. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is also a Clinical Lecturer at Worcester College, Oxford University.
Mr Silva is specialist advisor to the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), interventional procedures program and is on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Surgery (Open) and Current Surgery Reports. He is a reviewer for many leading scientific journals. He has in excess of 70 publications in international peer reviewed journals and has written many book chapters on his speciality interests.
Mr Arjun Takhar
Mr Arjun Takhar graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1998. he holds a PhD by thesis in Gastrointestinal Surgery from the Academic Unit of Cancer Studies at the University of Nottingham. He completed his higher surgical training with specialisation in HPB Surgery and Liver Transplantation followed by a Fellowship in Laparoscopic HPB surgery.
Mr Takhar’s interests lie in locally advanced pancreatic tumours. His team is the first in the UK to treat these tumours with surgery and intra-operative radiotherapy. He also has an interest in multi-visceral resections, hilar cholangiocarcinoma surgery and minimally invasive liver surgery. Mr Takhar is a Regional Surgical Advisor for Wessex and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Southampton University Medical School where he is the Year 3 Lead for Surgery.
