Overview

Join experts as they walk through the latest in supracondylar and femoral fracture treatment in children, including: surgical decision making for the child presenting with a supracondylar fracture that has neurological and / or vascular compromise; technical advice for closed and open reduction; identification of the indications for non-operative versus surgical management of a femoral fracture based on patient age and fracture stability, the rationale behind each method and technical advice for implementation.

The webinar will outline optimal management of supracondylar and femur fractures in children.

  • Understand the required clinical assessment for children presenting with flexion and extension supracondylar fractures that influence surgical decision making
  • Differentiate between indications for non-operative versus surgical management based on fracture classification, displacement and vascular status
  • Gain technical advice for reduction and wiring
  • Understand the indications for non-operative and surgical management of a femoral fracture based on the child’s age and fracture characteristics
  • Understand the surgical options available for femoral fracture fixation and their indications.

Our panellists include:

  • Miss Claire Carpenter (Chair) - Consultant paediatric orthopaedic and trauma surgeon, Noah’s Ark Hospital Cardiff. 

    Clare has been a consultant for the past 12 years.  She is the clinical lead for the paediatric major trauma centre, and Welsh national clinical lead for paediatric trauma.  She sits on the board of the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery and is also passionate about education.

  • Mr Jim Ballard - Consultant paediatric orthopaedic and trauma surgeon, The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. 

    Jim has been a consultant in children’s orthopaedics and trauma for 14 years, with fellowships in The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne and the Royal Hospital for Children Glasgow.  He maintains both paediatric and adult trauma practices with an expertise in reconstruction.

  • Miss Elaine Robinson - Consultant paediatric orthopaedic and trauma surgeon, Leeds Children’s Hospital.

    Elaine has been a consultant in children’s orthopaedics and trauma for 10 years, trainied in Belfast with fellowships in The Hospital for Sick Children Toronto and London Evelina Childen’s Hospital she currently practises in Leeds, one of the UK’s busiest trauma units.
