Overview

Join us for our third session in the “Beyond the Scalpel” series focusing on sustainability in surgery by Dr Ross Lathan. The session focuses on developing sustainable surgical leadership that reduces environmental impact whilst maintaining patient care. This session will provide the groundwork for pioneering an inclusive, sustainable and innovative future in surgical healthcare.

Aims

This webinar on sustainability in surgery aims to provide up to date knowledge of sustainability which is critical to modern surgical practice.   

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:

  • Recognise the importance and relevance of sustainability in the field of surgery and understand the potential impacts of current surgical practices on the environment.
  • Explore novel surgical techniques and technologies that contribute towards sustainability, aiming to minimise surgical waste and environmental footprint.
  • Understand the leadership role that surgeons can have in promoting sustainable practices within healthcare settings and influencing change among colleagues and teams.
  • Assess various clinical scenarios where sustainable surgical practices could be implemented, acknowledging the challenges and possible solutions.
  • Develop skills to become innovative surgical leaders who can integrate sustainability, inclusivity and innovation in their practices, contributing to a sustainable healthcare system.

Panellists

Our panellists include:

  • Dr Ross Lathan

    Vascular Surgery Registrar / NHSE Chief Sustainability Officer Fellow

    Ross is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Vascular Surgery. His research interests include surgical site infection, evaluating innovative diagnostic strategies, prevention measures and sustainable and environmental impact analysis. He is the Chief Sustainability Officer’s Clinical Fellow.
