Overview

Smile Bangladesh is a US based 501c3 global surgery non profit. Our mission is to provide free facial surgery for impoverished individuals in Bangladesh with facial differences. Since 2006 -  SB teams have performed 32 surgical camps and provided over 2000+ free surgeries. SB has also taken initiative in educating local surgeons to provide effective surgical care. This webinar will review the founding and evolution of SB with particular emphasis on the educational initiatives in place.

Aims

To review the evolution of a global surgery non profit – understanding the challenges, mistakes and successes over the last 20 years in hopes that this will inspire others to develop global surgery initiatives.

Panellists

Our panellists include:

  • Professor Shahid Aziz - DMD, MD, FRCSEd, FACS, FICD, FACD. Founder and President, Smile Bangladesh.

    Shahid Aziz is a New Jersey based academic oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He received his dental degree from Harvard University, Medical degree from Columbia University, and his surgical training at Columbia. An internationally recognized orthognathic surgeon, Professor Aziz founded Smile Bangaldesh in 2006 and leads surgical teams twice a year to Bangaldesh. To date Smile Bangladesh team have perfomed 32 surgical camps and 2000+ free surgeries to the indigent in Bangladesh.

  • Professor Jose M. Marchena - DMD, MD, FACS, FRCS(Ed), FICD. Vice President, Smile Bangladesh. 

    Dr. Marchena received his dental and medical degrees from Harvard University and completed specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans. He is a Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and serves of Chief of Service at Ben Taub Hospital.

  • Ms Christina Rozario - Executive Director, Smile Bangladesh. 

    Effective communicator with 25+ years of experience in international development agencies, with a specific focus on public health and rural development programs through an established record of leadership, productivity, and teaching. Helps coordinate with individual and organizational stakeholders across the world. Christina has been the key organizer for all 32 surgical missions of Smile Bangladesh since 2006.
