Overview
The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare is delighted to be hosting a new webinar examining dentistry in remote and rural areas as we seek to expand the awareness and understanding of dental and oral care in remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare settings.
Dental/facial problems are common and it is problematic for patients to access dental care in remote and rural areas. Some of these conditions require urgent or emergency care and referral to specialist centres. This session is suitable for emergency care professionals who may be asked to assess patients presenting with acute dental problems.
Aims
This is an overview of common oral and dental problems that can present in remote and rural areas. It will highlight the recognition of conditions that require emergency and urgent care and those that may be managed conservatively.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, attendees will have:
- Increased knowledge of common dental/orofacial conditions that can occur in remote and rural areas
- Be able to assess conditions that require referral for urgent/emergency dental care.

Panellists
Our panellists include:
Professor Kathryn Taylor - Chair in Oral Surgery, Postgraduae Lead for Dentistry, University of Central Lancashire. Kate is experienced in the recognition and management of emergency and acute facial and dental conditions. She is Postgraduate Lead for Dental Programmes and teaches/supervises MSc Oral Surgery students at UCLan.
Dr Shalini Kanagasingam - Specialist Endodontist, Hon. Consultant in Endodontology UHMB NHS Foundation Trust, Lead for MSc Endodontics, University of Central Lancashire. Shalini is experienced in managing dental pain and dental trauma. Her research interests include raising awareness of the links between general health and oral health, antibiotic governance as well as the importance of saving natural teeth via root canal treatment. She is a Specialist in Endodontics, Honorary Consultant in Endodontology (Royal Lancaster Infirmary) and Postgraduate Lead for the MSc Endodontics programme at UCLan.
Mr Burjor Langdana - Burjor is currently an NHS dentist in England. He is a Honorary Clinical Professor Extreme Medicine Univ Exeter, Lecturer University of Las Vegas, Faculty member of World Extreme Medicine, RCPS Glasgow, COROM and editor and contributing author for the dental chapter in the Oxford Handbook of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine and Dental Director at Team5 Medical Foundation.
He is a resident expedition dentist for AdventureMedic; founder of Wilderness Expedition Dentistry and past consultant dentist for the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit. He has many years’ experience in expedition dentistry, having first become interested in this specialism while running dental camps in India and later when working in Oman, Antarctic; VSO Malawi, and Mobile Surgical Services in New Zealand.
