Governance of Healthcare Innovation in Brazil

This webinar is in partnership with Interactive Health. IHL provides strategic advice ranging from designing and implementing new national digital health systems and interventions, supporting primary and pre-hospital digital healthcare at remote locations, to devising bespoke leadership programmes for the health and education sectors. Their clients include national and local governments, government organisations such as the NHS, leading universities, NGOs and large corporate organisations.
The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the process of digital innovation in the Brazilian healthcare sector. The exceptional legal authorization for the practice of telemedicine opened up a field of services that had previously faced regulatory barriers. The government accelerated the implementation of its app Conecte SUS, which served to certify the population's vaccination. Brazilian authorities published the regulation for medical device registration, after years of public consultations and debates. The vibrant Brazilian innovation environment features at least 590 health techs in 2022.
This context, however, calls for caution. The development of new technologies shall be done in an ethical, responsible, and legal way. The pandemic has also shown that the search for quick solutions may contradict scientific evidence, standards of professional ethics, or fundamental rights. This event explores the tension and bring mechanisms of governance of innovation in healthcare based on the Brazilian example.
Aims
Based on Brazilian experiences and regulations and the dialogue with Scottish experts, the panel aims to explore the tension between the necessity of speedy innovation for products and services in healthcare and the concerns with scientific and evidence-based advances in Medicine.
