Aims
The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare are delighted to be hosting this webinar ahead of their Introduction to Humanitarian Online Course launching soon.
This will be an insightful evening with an opportunity to hear from experienced humanitarian healthcare professionals sharing their expertise and ‘what they wished they had known’ before their first humanitarian deployment.
This webinar is suitable for anyone interested in humanitarian healthcare and all specialties and career grades are welcome.

Speaker 1: Peter Skelton, MSc, MCSP, Rehabilitation in Emergencies Lead, WHO
Title of presentation: Personal Attributes and Considerations for Deployment
Bio: Peter Skelton is Rehabilitation in Emergencies focal point with WHO. A physiotherapist and one time medical anthropologist, he previously worked as rehabilitation lead of the UK Emergency Medical Team and Humanitarian Advisor for a number of INGOs.
Since responding to the Haiti earthquake in 2010, Pete has been involved in responses lasting from a few short weeks to over a year, working in emergencies including conflicts, mass displacements, earthquakes and cyclones.
Before working in the humanitarian sector, he split his time between the NHS and health projects in West Arica and India.
Speaker 2: Nigel Rossiter FRCSEd (Tr&Orth) FFSTEd is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon in Basingstoke
Title of Presentation: What training / courses are available
Bio: Nigel is a past (and founding) President of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society. Having been involved in much “Hearts and Minds” work during various deployments over an 18-year military career on leaving The Army he has become heavily involved in humanitarian and charitable medical work. Nigel twinned his hospital with one in Uganda and has gone on to chair the Primary Trauma Care Foundation, teaching trauma care for the severely injured in 81 LMICs. He now also works with the United Nations G4Alliance on Trauma care and advocacy.
Speaker 3: Dr Freda Newlands MBChB BSc PGCE, Associate Specialist Emergency Medicine
Title of Presentation: Joining the ‘Humanitarian Club’: A brief look at some of the players and how to approach them.
Bio: Freda graduated from the University of Warwick Medical School following an earlier career in teaching.
Extensive experience in clinical practice in Emergency Medicine in the NHS provided Freda with the necessary qualifications and drive to transfer to the humanitarian field with work with organisations such as WHO, Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF), UK-Med, Medecins Du Monde (MdM) and Health Volunteers Overseas.
Combining clinical and organisational skills with those of teaching and simulation has enabled her to work with these agencies in Northern Jordan, Bangladesh, South Sudan, Myanmar, Armenia, Bhutan, Estonia and Gaza.
During a year-long career break from clinical commitments, Freda was employed by UK-Med to manage clinicians within the UK-Emergency Medical Team, and more recently, as part of a collaborative project between WHO and MdM, Freda was involved in contingency planning for emergency preparedness across five Ministry of Health hospitals in Gaza.
