Skin cancer management by the generalist

Overview

Basal cell carcinoma is the most commonly occurring of all cancers, and melanoma is the 5^th most common in the UK, with a 140% increase in prevalence since the early 1990s. Skin cancer can present to and involve many different healthcare professionals. Current guidelines allow for definitive management of lower-risk skin cancers in primary care settings and some rural practitioners will also be involved in definitive management of melanoma.

This webinar will provide a concise update on the diagnosis and management of skin cancers, together with an exploration of how these clinical tasks might be supported or delivered by generalists.

Aims

This webinar will refresh knowledge and skills in the presentation, diagnosis and management of skin cancer, and explore models of care delivery in a rural or generalist setting.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:

• Recognise and differentiate common presentations of skin cancer
• Describe the key steps involved in the diagnostic work-up of a skin cancer patient
• Describe the management principles in treating skin cancer
• Discuss the models of care possible in delivering skin cancer care to remote and rural populations.

Mr Kaz Rahman

Kaz Rahman is a consultant plastic surgeon in Aberdeen with a particular interest in cancer reconstruction in advanced skin cancer, head & neck and limb reconstruction. He is the clinical lead of skin cancer for the North Cancer Alliance resulting in both regional and national work relating to skin cancer care in Scotland. He also sits on BAPRAS council and the specialty advisory broad for Plastic Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and his training was predominately in London and Newcastle including research into altered wound healing at University College London.

Mr Kushik Lalla

SAS General Surgeon, Gilbert Bain Hospital, Shetland. Mr Lalla is a native of South Africa, where he undertook undergraduate and initial postgraduate medical training. Following a move to the UK in 1999, he settled in Shetland where he currently works in A&E and surgery as a SAS doctor. At the Gilbert Bain Hospital he acts as clinical lead for trauma and for skin cancer.

Dr Gabriella Marchitelli

Core Surgical Trainee based in Scotland currently on a remote and rural placement in Gilbert Bain Hospital, Shetland. She obtained her undergraduate medical degree at Hull York Medical School, intercalating at Imperial College London where she did research on spectrophotometric intracutaneous analysis of pigmentation levels in skin. She further developed her interest in skin cancer care and global surgery through posts in plastic surgery and dermatology whilst being part of Incision UK's junior doctor committee.

Ms Lauren Smithson

Rural Surgical Fellow, Raigmore Hospital. Lauren Smithson is a general surgeon, originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, who did medical school in the Caribbean followed by surgical residency in Detroit, Michigan. She then worked as a rural general surgeon in Saint Anthony, Newfoundland, amongst the polar bears and caribou. During that time, she volunteered for the Rural Surgery Advisory Committee to the American College of Surgeons, served on the Canadian Association of General Surgeons Rural Committee, and chaired the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada working group on specialty care in rural areas. After 6 years, she has moved to Inverness to complete the Rural and Remote Fellowship, during which she plans to continue advocating for rural surgery and rural medicine, writing rural training curriculums and research. She loves being outdoors, loves history, and has taken to brewing beer, so she finds Inverness and the Black Isle ideal for her. She’s thrilled to be back amongst the Vikings.

Mr Ben Aldridge 

Ben Aldridge is a Consultant Plastic and Dermatological Surgeon. His expertise is in the procedural management of skin disease with his major NHS focus being cutaneous surgical oncology and soft tissue facial reconstruction. During his Pan-Scotland Plastic Surgery training (Canniesburn, Edinburgh & Aberdeen) he also completed a PhD in Dermatoinformatics investigating skin cancer diagnostics at the University of Edinburgh. During his latter NTN training he was selected for five national and international fellowships (Cutaneous oncology & Mohs surgery, LASER surgery, Cosmetic surgery, Cutaneous Surgery at the UK’s National Skin Hospital - St John’s Institute of Dermatology, where he previously trained in dermatology - and a BAAPS funded fellowship in Aesthetic Facial surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology at La Clinic, Switzerland). These fellowships meant he developed in-depth expertise in a number of specialist areas, before returning to Scotland to take up dual consultant posts in the Departments of Dermatology and Plastic Surgery for NHS Lothian and NHS Lanarkshire. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer for the University of Edinburgh, Chair of the South-East Scotland Melanoma MDM and Deputy Chair of the SCAN Skin group.
