The Management of Spinal Cord Injury in Resource Constrained Circumstances

19th October 2026, 19:00 to 20:00 BST

Overview

In constrained circumstances, the immediate crisis of a spinal cord injury lies in the inability to confirm a diagnosis, protect the cord from secondary injury and  initiate definitive treatment. This webinar reviews best practices for emergency management and stabilization; safe evacuation; establishing a diagnosis; initiating definitive treatment including contending with delayed care; and later rehabilitation. The rehabilitation aspects are often neglected in considering the management of spinal cord injury in remote settings, and will receive particular attention here.

Aims

  1. Principles of acute stabilization and emergency evacuation after spinal cord injury
  2. Principles of diagnosis leading to definitive management
  3. Where definitive management can be provided
  4. Acceptable delays in definitive management to optimise outcomes
  5. Principles of rehabilitation and reintegration.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the webinar, the participant should understand the principles of acute stabilization after spinal cord injury and the principles of emergency evaculation. Next, the participant should be familiar with diagnostic methods available in constrained circumstances and their limitation. Third the participant should understnad general pricnciples of definitive treatment. Finally, the participant will be able to outline principles of rehabiliation for spinal cord injury in constrained resource situation
