Viking Surgeons Association - General Surgery subspecialties in the Rural Unit – Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Overview
The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare have partnered with the Viking Surgeons Association (VSA) to deliver a series of webinars focused on Rural Surgery.
This one-hour symposium aims to discuss common presentations of plastic surgery cases, including hand injuries, burn injuries and skin lesions. The focus will be on acute management and when to refer to specialist centres. The symposium will take the form of lectures, case discussions and a Q&A session.
At the end of the session, the participant should be able to:
- Recognise tendon injuries in the hand and when to refer for specialist treatment
- Manage soft tissue loss in fingertips and hand, and know when to refer for specialist treatment
- Manage small burn injuries
- Initial management of bigger burn injuries and know when to refer
- Recognition of malignant skin lesions and know when to refer

Wee is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in Edinburgh with a special interest in hand and microsurgery. Wee was the President of BFIRST, the BAPRAS overseas arm and a current editor for the Journal of Hand Surgery (European).

Neil is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in Edinburgh with a specialty interest in soft tissue hand / upper limb reconstruction as well as general microsurgery.

Title of presentations: A burn injury: what to do locally (smaller burn, dressings in vogue) and when to refer (larger burn)
Daniel's specialist interests currently are in burns, laser, breast and skin surgery with reconstruction. He originally trained in London and subsequently underwent surgical training in southwest England then Glasgow. Daniel is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and has undertaken fellowships in the USA and UK, focussing primarily on burns surgery at Galveston in Texas. Daniel co-leads the burns team at St. John’s as well as the regional laser service.
Speaker 4: Mr. Hilal Bahia
MD FRCS (Plast) is a Consultant Burn and Plastic Surgeon in Edinburgh.

Hilal has worked as a burn surgeon at St John’s Hospital Plastic Surgery Unit for over 10 years and is an honorary senior lecturer in Plastic and Burn surgery for The Royal College of Surgeons and the University of Edinburgh. He has also been an active member of the Care of Burns in Scotland (COBIS) group, for which he is leads the educational subcommittee.
