Viking Surgeons Association: Ophthalmology for the Rural Surgeon

Overview
The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare have partnered with the Viking Surgeons Association (VSA) to deliver a series of webinars focused on Rural Surgery.
This webinar will be of interest for Surgeons working in Remote regions where immediate access to trained Ophthalmologists is limited/non-existent. Deliberately there will be a focus on conditions affecting the majority world, but there will be a relevance for those working in more established market economies as Red flag infections can occur anywhere. The do’s and don’ts of lid abnormalities are universal, and the safe management of trauma and simple tumours will be discussed. The novel low-cost Arclight Ophthalmoscope is a device that no health care practitioner should be without. Its versatility and the philosophy behind its promotion will be presented.
Panellists
Chair/Speaker 1: Dr Andrew Pyott
Title of presentation: Ocular infections
Bio: Dr Andrew Pyott formally worked for the International Development Organisation CBM, establishing a training eye unit in rural Cambodia. He has also worked in Ghana, and Palestine. He has travelled extensively in South East Asia, and over the last fifteen years has established Links with Eye care programmes in Indonesia. He is a former President of the Scottish Ophthalmological Club, and a Regional Representative on the Council of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is currently Head of Service for the Department of Ophthalmology in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.
Speaker 2: Mr David Verity
Title of presentation: Oculoplastics
Bio: Mr David Verity is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, President of the British Oculoplastics Surgery Society, and Hospitaller of the Order of St John. He has served St John across Palestine and Gaza.
Speaker 3: Dr Andrew Blaikie
Title of Presentation: The Arclight Project – Frugal approaches to blindness prevention
Bio: Dr Andrew Blaikie is a Consultant Ophthalmologist in NHS Fife and Senior Lecturer in the Infection and Global Health Division team at the University of St Andrews where he leads the Arclight Project - http://med.st-andrews.ac.uk/arclight/. His main interests are in the development, evaluation and implementation frugal diagnostic and teaching tools for eye and ear care in low resource countries.
