Concept of training future professional surgeons and potential unintentional pitfalls
4th August 2026, 19:00 to 20:00 BST
Overview
The three main pillars of professionalism are: being highly skilful, aiming to advance the profession as a whole rather than being self-centred, and having the appropriate degree of autonomy. This definition will apply to training true professional surgeons of the future. The detrimental effect of losing any of these three pillars with examples of different scenarios will be presented during this webinar.
Training is aimed to produce highly skilful surgeons with complimentary knowledge based on critical thinking, experience and mastering of operative techniques and finally capable to deliver passionate “human touch”. With autonomy being a main pillar defining professionals, it is gauging the appropriate degree of autonomy that may potentially compromise maintaining surgeons as true professionals. With good intention, guidelines and protocols are developed to achieve a uniform high standard of practice.
However, curtailing autonomy in such a way may compromise critical thinking and hinder raising of the boundaries and future developments. The onus is not only on the trainers but also the trainees being able to evaluate the facts and scientific evidence rather than blindly following guidelines and unintended conclusions from published results.
Finally, and perhaps more difficult to achieve, is to implant the culture and drive away from self-achievements to advancing the surgical profession locally and globally.
