Overview
This is a global online event relevant to all who work in health care, with a focus on the role of the surgical team in delivering care. Registration is free and open to anyone who wishes to attend. This is a first for the RCSEd and we are grateful to Chapman & Co for providing their expertise in running interactive online events, to support the delivery of the FST conference. Participants will be encouraged to use a smartphone or another second screen to actively participate and answer questions.
Speakers
The conference panel is formed of a diverse group of experts with a range of skills in healthcare, surgery, education, business, leadership, coaching, training, human factors, and situational awareness. They have experience working with high performance teams, global industries, firefighters, aircrews, and fighter pilots in theatres of operation, cockpits, and on oil rigs.
All have worked in high performance teams and understand the critical importance of listening and communication.
The conference is headlined by the global leader, Bob Chapman, CEO of Barry-Wehmiller and co-author of the bestselling book; ‘Everybody Matters – the extraordinary power of caring for your people like family’.
His message is changing the way people think and is building a #betterworld through #trulyhumanleadership and solutions that believe #EverybodyMatters. He is in high demand on the TED circuit, cited as the mentor to Simon Sinek and by the President Bush Foundation.

Cockpit communication – learning to ask open inclusive questions.Peter is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Portsmouth, UK with a personal chair in Surgery in recognition of his research and education profile. He has published extensively on human factors (HF) and patient safety. He is editor of 5 major specialty surgical textbooks and Lead Editor for the recently published Gray’s Surgical Anatomy. His extensive HF work and unique collaborations with airline pilots, UK National Air Traffic Services (NATS) and others has resulted in many changes to practice, better team working, reducing hierarchy, patient safety improvements across medical specialties.

Communication and culture in healthcareDr Keith Cloete was appointed as DDG: Chief of Operations for Western Cape Government: Health, effective 1 March 2015 and as Head of Health for the Western Cape Government on 1 April 2020. He was the Chief Director for Metro District Health Services since 2007 and prior to that, the Director: HIV/ AIDS/ STI and TB since 2003. He has been involved in a range of leadership interventions towards a more resilient and people-centred Department, as part of a collective learning journey.
