The Future Surgical Trainers

Overview
The Faculty of Surgical Trainers (FST) is proud to be instrumental in adjudicating, with the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT), the Silver Suture and Silver Scissors Awards to identify the best trainee trainers in the UK. These trainees are identified by their peers and medical students as being outstanding trainers against the same criteria as the Silver Scalpel Award (Leadership, Professionalism, Resourcefulness, Trainee development, Communication). ASiT and FST representatives then interview them against the FST standards. The insight, passion and teaching abilities of these future trainers has to be shared – they bring the FST Standards to life.
Panellists
David O'Regan
Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers
Mr David O’Regan MBA MD BM FRCSEd (C-TH) FFSTEd, Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon for nineteen years and Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the RCSEd. Initiated the Black Belt Academy of Surgical Skills that teaches how to ‘hone surgical skills’ and has a global following of over 3160 in 47 counties.
Arjun Nathan
Arjun is an ST2 in Urology at UCLH and an NIHR ACF with the Royal College of Surgeons as well as co-vice chair of the BURST Urology research collaborative. He has a great passion for surgical education and training, in particular improving accessibility and widening diversity within surgery. He founded the National Surgical Teaching Society, and they provide free surgery-based webinars, practical surgical skills training and research opportunities for students and doctors to collaborate and lead research projects.
Mohamed Abdelrahman
Mohamed is a UGI SpR in the South-West. He has been involved in clinical teaching since he was a medical student. As a sixth year he was involved in the Oxford MedEd scheme where he taught a group of fourth years clinical examination. He returned to Oxford as a core trainee and was involved in anatomy demonstration. He was heavily involved in surgical bedside teaching at the University of Oxford and was nominated ‘Teacher of the Year’ three times and won it once. Since being an SpR in the South-West, his focus is mainly on small group teaching for MRCS and more recently FRCS groups.
Kelsey Mills
Dr Kelsey Mills currently works as a teaching fellow in ENT in Bristol, having applied for core surgical training this year. Prior to this, she completed an FY3 year in plastic surgery in Glasgow, Foundation training in Dumfries and studied in Glasgow. She was nominated for the silver scissor award by one of the medical students she worked closely with as graduate liaison of the Glasgow university’s plastic surgery society, who appreciated her efforts in organising speakers for their online webinar series, practical skills sessions and allocating supervisors for student selected components. Outside of medicine she enjoys baking and hill walking.
