The NetZero Operating Theatre

Overview
The first webinar in this new intercollegiate series will concentrate on interventions that can be made inside the operating theatre structured around the principles of sustainability.
This webinar will end with the first intercollegiate BIG GREEN ROOM: in the last 30 minutes, the discussion will be opened to the floor and participants will be invited to share the experiences/questions/solutions that they have encountered in an effort to make operating theatres greener.
Aims
- To showcase interventions and share case studies aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of surgical operations with the aim of achieving #NetZeroSurgery within the operating theatre.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:
- Identify carbon hotspots within the Operating theatre
- Further their knowledge of sustainability in surgery
- list appropriate and scientifically validated interventions that can reduce the carbon footprint of their operative practice.
Panellists
Our panellists include:
- Professor S Michael Griffin - President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Professor Michael Griffin OBE became President in 2018 when he was a Consultant Oesophagogastric surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. He developed the Northern Oesophagogastric Cancer Unit which is now the largest in Europe and North America. A Council Member since 2009, he was Chair of the Joint Committee for Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE) and Professor of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. His clinical and research interests have been focused on early diagnosis and radical treatment of oesophagogastric cancers. He was awarded an OBE for services to cancer health care in 2013.
- Professor Neil Mortensen - President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Neil Mortensen is Professor of Colorectal Surgery in the University of Oxford Medical School and has been on the staff of the Oxford University Hospitals since 1987, where he is currently honorary consultant colorectal surgeon. He is Fellow of Green Templeton College. He became a member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2013, and a member of the Trustee Board in 2016. In 2017 he was appointed Vice President, and in 2020 he was appointed President.
- Chantelle Rizan - Chantelle Rizan is a Research Fellow at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust in the last year of her PhD at BSMS evaluating ways to reduce the environmental impact of common operations. Chantelle seeks to translate her research into practice and to influence policy as a founding member of the RCSEng Sustainability in Surgery working group, and will be working with the UK Health and Climate Change Alliance as an academic advisor on a national report on how to meet Net Zero Carbon within surgery.
- Jasmine Winter Beatty - Jasmine Winter Beatty is a Surgical Registrar in the North-West London deanery currently pursuing a PhD with Imperial College London. Jasmine has been running numerous sustainability projects in her Trust, including setting up a Green Surgery and Anaesthesia Taskforce, a volatile capture technology trial and leading the Imperial team to win second place in the Green Surgery Challenge. She is a Sustainability Champion in the RCSEd Sustainability working group.
- Victoria Pegna (Chair) - ST7 Colorectal & General Surgery, KSS Deanery. She is a Member of Council; RCS England, Co-founder and Co-chair of sustainability in surgery (SiS) committee at the RCSEng. Steering committee for Greener Surgery Challenge, CSH.
- Prash Jesudason - Mr Jesudason is a Consultant Hand & Orthopaedic surgeon, working in Bangor, on the beautiful North Wales coast. He has an interest in sustainable healthcare and moving towards low carbon surgical interventions. Last year the team led by himself and Mr Kodumuri came joint-second in the Green Surgery Challenge launched by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare and RCSE.
