Overview
This webinar introduces the essential concepts and principles of patient safety. Participants will explore the evolution of the patient safety movement, key milestones, and lessons learned from major initiatives. Highly relevant to surgeons and healthcare professionals, the session will highlight how patient safety principles apply directly to clinical decision-making, teamwork, governance, and system improvement. It provides a strong foundation for understanding how key concepts of patient safety science inform safer practice and better outcomes today.
This webinar will be the first in a new series of monthly Patient Safety webinars organised by the RCSEd Patient Safety group.

- To explore the historical development of the patient safety movement and highlight key lessons learned that continue to shape safe healthcare practice today.

Panellists
Our panellists include:

Helen Vosper - Helen is a Chartered Human Factors specialist and an academic with professional recognition as a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
She is currently also a Senior Lecturer in Patient Safety at the University of Aberdeen, where she is responsible for working with staff to design, deliver and evaluate the patient safety strategy for medical and related programmes. Helen is also a Scientific Adviser to NHS Education for Scotland, supporting the development of both the education programme and a practical toolkit designed to support human factors activity across NHS Scotland.
- Manoj Kumar - Education Lead for the Patient Safety Group and Course Director for the Team-Based Quality Reviews (TBQR) Course at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, where he also serves as a Regional Surgical Ambassador.
He is a faculty member and Convenor for the Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) course. He is a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon and Associate Director of Medical Education at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
