Overview

What is QI? How can and should it be used in the clinical setting, and when should it not be used?

How do we choose a successful project and what can we do to improve the likelihood of success?

This webinar will provide a discussion about the value of QI and how it can contribute to whole system improvement.

Aims

Provide an introduction to the principles of QI and how to run a successful project. This will include some of the basics of QI methodology as well as in introduction to Kotter’s theory of change, theories of complexity and some human factors and psychology.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:

  • Know when a QI project can be applied

  • Know when QI is not the right approach

  • Know how to maximise success of a QI project

  • Have a basic understanding of the psychology of change.

Dr Ed James

Dr Ed James was appointed as a consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in February 2015.

Since that time he has been the QI lead for Emergency Medicine and has run and supervised multiple projects including redesigning the model for care in the RIE Emergency Department. He is a Scottish Quality and Safety Fellow and until recently was the Education Lead for the programme. In addition to this he is a National Clinical Advisor for Unscheduled care, working for the Centre for Sustainable Delivery – focussing on Pre-Hospital and Front Door delivery with a focus on Flow Navigation and Observation Medicine. He recently redeveloped the Flow Navigation Service for NHS Lothian, introducing a consultant led model of care.

 

Mr Manoj Kumar

Education Lead for the Patient Safety Group and Course Director for the Team-Based Quality Reviews (TBQR) Course at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, where he also serves as a Regional Surgical Ambassador.

He is a faculty member and Convenor for the Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) course. He is a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon and Associate Director of Medical Education at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
