Overview

This webinar will provide a practical focused approach to upper gastrointestinal endoscopy based on the latest British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and AUGIS guidance. It will cover key principles of high-quality endoscopy including procedural technique, mucosal visualisation, systematic inspection, and lesion recognition. Emphasis will be placed on early cancer detection, Barrett’s surveillance, and common pitfalls in practice. The session will integrate evidence-based recommendations with real-world surgical relevance and include interactive discussion.

Aims

To provide structured, evidence-based approach to performing and interpreting upper GI endoscopy, aligned with current UK BSG–AUGIS best practice guidance, with emphasis on improving diagnostic quality and early cancer detection.

By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:

  • Describe the components of high-quality upper GI endoscopy, including preparation, sedation, and systematic examination.
    Apply a structured approach to oesophageal, gastric, and duodenal inspection to improve lesion detection
    Recognise key features of early upper GI malignancy and premalignant conditions
    Understand the role of chromoendoscopy and mucosal enhancement techniques in improving diagnostic accuracy
    Identify appropriate biopsy strategies and documentation standards during endoscopy
    Appreciate the importance of procedure time, photo-documentation, and systematic reporting in quality assurance.
