Ischaemic Bowel – when to resect and when to palliate
19th January 2026, 19:00 to 20:00 GMT
Overview
Join us for the next RCS Edinburgh × ASGBI FRCS Webinar on Ischaemic Bowel — When to Resect and When to Palliate, featuring Dr Matti Tolonen (Helsinki), who will explore key decision-making principles in managing bowel ischaemia, followed by Prof Dave Russell discussing “Bowel Ischaemia: The Role of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.” This session will provide high-yield insights into surgical judgment, multidisciplinary management, and FRCS-level knowledge essential for trainees and consultants alike. Don’t miss this interactive, expert-led discussion on one of general surgery’s most challenging emergencies.
Aims
- To discuss evidence-based strategies for decision-making — when to resect, when to palliate, and when to refer for vascular intervention.
- To outline the role of vascular and endovascular approaches in managing acute and chronic mesenteric ischaemia.
- To integrate multidisciplinary perspectives to improve patient outcomes in complex ischaemic bowel cases.
- To provide FRCS-level learning points and case-based discussion relevant to surgical trainees and practising surgeons.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:
- Differentiate between acute and chronic bowel ischaemia and recognise key clinical and radiological features.
- Formulate an evidence-based approach to decision-making regarding resection versus palliation.
- Understand the principles and indications for vascular and endovascular interventions in bowel ischaemia.
- Apply multidisciplinary strategies to optimise perioperative management and patient outcomes.
- Identify FRCS-relevant discussion points and viva-style reasoning in cases of ischaemic bowel.
