Complete mesocolic excision hemicolectomy versus standard hemicolectomy
- Oncological superiority proven or time to pause for reflection?
23rd November 2026, 12:00 to 13:00 GMT / 20:00 - 21:00 MYT
Overview
Complete mesocolic excision (CME) hemicolectomy has become increasingly popular over the last several years. CME is perceived as oncologically superior to standard/conventional hemicolectomy as a surgical treatment for right-sided colonic malignancy. Globally, several leading colorectal surgeons and colorectal units strongly advocate CME for right-sided colon cancers. However, despite the advent of CME around two decades ago and increased experience, there remains a lack of clarity about its true oncological benefits. This webinar will provide comprehensive review and update of CME, including its results and oncological outcomes compared with standard hemicolectomy for colonic malignancy.
Aims
To provide a comprehensive update on Complete mesocolic excision (CME) hemicolectomy on the following:
- The short-term outcome and postoperative results
- Oncological outcomes: medium and long-term
- Whether CME is oncologically superior to standard/conventional hemicolectomy as a surgical treatment for right-sided colonic malignancy.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:
- Understand the principles of complete mesocolic excision (CME)
- Know the peri-operative and short-term outcomes of CME
- Aware of the current comprehensive evidence on the oncological outcomes of CME
- Know whether CME is oncologically superior to standard hemicolectomy for the surgical treatment of colonic malignancy
- Know when to consider CME for the surgical treatment of right-sided colon cancers.
