Money Matters: Financial Literacy for Surgeons - Episode 1

Overview
As part of the 2026 RCSEd Wellbeing Series, this webinar will focus on the financial health of resident doctors. It will cover key topics to ensure improved financial literacy and dispel some of the confusion around money matters in medicine.
The session will be delivered by panellists from Wesleyan Financial Services and will address issues that are particularly relevant to resident doctors in the UK. The topics have been developed in collaboration with Wesleyan and RCSEd Trainees’ Committee members, Alex Haddon and Abdel Hamed.
Topics to be covered:
- Beginning with NHS payslips, tax, and broader taxation issues
- Progressing to the benefits as an employee of the NHS, including pensions, sick pay, sacrifice schemes and life cover

Panellists

Alec Collie
Alec Collie is a Chartered Financial Planner and currently leads the Medical division at Wesleyan. Alec’s mission is to make financial advice trusted and accessible so medical professionals and families can plan with confidence at all stages of their career and beyond. He leads and supports ten regional teams across the UK, working with doctors in NHS primary and secondary care, private practice and industry.
Alec is committed to inclusion in business and currently serves as a mentor for Mission Include / Moving Ahead, the cross‑company diversity and inclusion programme that connects leaders and accelerates cultural change; he has mentored individuals from different backgrounds over the past three years. He holds a First Class BA (Hons) in Financial Services (2025), is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, and has a Level 5 coaching and mentoring qualification from the Institute of Leadership & Management. In his spare time he volunteers with the Royal Voluntary Service.
