Using Neuroscience to harness performance

22nd May 2023

Overview

Working as a surgeon involves performing under high stakes. Unlike top athletes or military leaders who also work in high pressure environments, surgeons do not routinely receive coaching in performance psychology. Studying performance could help surgeons understand their psychological blueprint, to harness their behaviour under pressure, or to stop mistakes from affecting the quality of their performance.

Join us for our first Wellbeing Week webinar that integrates neuroscience and psychological theory to enhance your performance skills, build resilience and to help reduce occupational burn out.

Dr Sarah Caddy is a GP working in emergency medicine and has coached gold-medalists, company executives and other medical professionals over the past nine years. She works closely with Prof Steve peters who developed and authored a best selling book called the “The Chimp Paradox”. Sarah and Steve recently conducted a clinical trial evaluating the model’s effectiveness in reducing burnout in medical professionals.

Aims

We will aim to discuss the neuroscientific basis behind our emotions and behaviours in high stake situations. The goal is to provide surgeons with strategies to optimise their performance, improve their response to experiences at work and reduce stress and burnout.
